Purpose:
to articulate a clear, achievable class goal.
Process:
After settling on a shared priority that a class can work on together, it’s useful to review the group goal so that everyone is crystal clear about it. One way to do this is to create a one-sentence summary of the goal. The summary should answer the questions: who, what, when, where (and under what conditions) and why. For example:
| Who: |
Our Class |
| What: |
will do research to find out about and compare used cars |
| When: |
over the next two weeks |
| Where/under what conditions: |
in class using books, magazines, and the car “blue book” |
| Why: |
to help us decide what kind of car to buy. |
- Try using this format with students to write a one sentence summary of the goal in their own words.
- If you are working with very limited English speakers and you share their native language(s), translate the goal so you are sure they understand it.
- Post the goal clearly on the wall and/or have students keep it in a notebook or portfolio so that it can be referred to as the teaching/learning cycle progresses.
