Purposes for Using the Performance Continuum

The EFF Learn Through Research performance continuum is a tool that can be used for a variety of purposes and at different stages of the instructional process. The chart below summarizes some of the key purposes for using the performance continuum before, during and after instruction.

Teachers and programs:
to administer secure accountability assessment tasks that measure movement from one performance level to the next
Individual Mastery and Credentialing

Programs:
To assess learner knowledge and skills in relation to the requirements of a credential (such as the EFF Work Readiness Credential)

Teachers:
to measure progress toward attainment of the knowledge and skills required for the credential

Programs, state and local agencies:
to administer assessments for obtaining a credential, certificate, diploma or license
Program Improvement and Accountability

Programs and state agencies:
to gather baseline data for continuous program improvement

Programs:
to monitor how the program/curriculum is meeting learner needs

Programs and state agencies:
to gather summative learner data for continuous program improvement

System Improvement and Accountability

State and national agencies:
to gather baseline information for research and evaluation

State and national agencies:
to evaluate program quality and needs

State and national agencies:
To complete state accountability reporting and federal accountability reporting (e.g. on the NRS)
